Scrap Quilt Fabric Keyfob

I am having so much fun finding easy ways to include quilts into my daily life. Recently, I took some scraps from the quilt projects I’ve been working on and made a few keychain fobs. With just a few minutes, some scrap quilt pieces and leftover key rings, these came together pretty quickly.

I love using quilts in our home. When you come to visit, you’ll see them everywhere. We use family quilts on all the beds, quilt pillow shams, our quilted window frame, and of course the scrappy quilt footstool.

So when I decided I needed a new keyfob, it just made sense that I should use some scrap quilt fabric pieces. If I can make these, then anyone can!

Materials Needed

  • Scrap quilt pieces
  • D-ring (preferred) or regular large keychain
  • Sewing machine

Directions

There are lots of tutorials for this project, but honestly, some of them were too complex for what I wanted. Plus, most of them use new fabric. So I kind of winged it for my keychain fobs.

I used a quilt topper that I found at a thrift store earlier this summer and cut a strip about 4 inches wide and 13 inches long.

  • I folded the insides together and stitched closely along the edge.
    • For the wedding ring quilt scrap, I didn’t bother folding it and turning. Instead, I just sewed a seam and used it with raw edges exposed. It’s lasted this many years, I figure it will give me several more years of enjoyment and it’s too thick to turn.
  • Then used a safety pin to pull the insides back out so I had a long tube.
  • Take the time to iron the tube flat. Trust me, this step just makes it easier to sew along the edge.
  • Sew a tight stitch along each side.
  • Add your D-ring or keychain.
  • Flip it around and sew as tight to the D-ring. *I did find that the zipper foot helped so I could get in closer to the metal without breaking a needle.

All the crooked seams and imperfections just prove that it’s made with love and not in a factory, right?

I love the way they turned out but I think my favorite is this scrap piece I rescued from my grandma and great grandmother’s double wedding ring quilt. So, it went straight to my backpack that I carry with me all the time.

Which one is your favorite? Have you ever made keyfobs like this with scrap quilt fabric? I’d love to see how yours turns out!

Spread the love
