Back to School Backpack Prep

By now you have probably sent your kids back to school with all their supplies. They’ve got new tennis shoes, a good backpack and notebooks. But did you make sure they have the other supplies that will keep them safe, comfortable, and ready for whatever the school year throws at them? Here are a few things that we always make sure our kids have in their school backpacks, no matter their age.

First Aid Supplies

I remember when my `daughter was playing middle school basketball and she got a cut that was bleeding too much for her to stay in the game. She quickly looked for the first aid kit that we all expected would be available on the bench but it was non-existent. Fortunately, she had her own stash of bandaids in the locker room. A quick dash to her gym bag and she was ready to get back in the game.

In a perfect world, all schools, clubs, and teams would have first aid supplies available, but I don’t want my kids to have to rely on someone else to be prepared for a simple medical emergency. This small zip first aid kit is perfect for stashing in a backpack or dorm room so they’ll be ready for things that might come up in school or extracurricular activities.

We also think it’s important for our family to have basic training on how to handle more advanced medical emergencies. Programs like STOP THE BLEED® guide you through the three methods of bleeding control using video demonstrations, interactive learning, and spontaneous quizzes. This program is free and can be taken online or in person for more in-depth training.

Check with your local hospital or emergency responder units to find other local CPR training courses.

Snacks for Each Person

We have always made sure that we never leave the house without some sort of snack. We make sure that each member of the family always has something in their backpack, dorm or vehicle so they can stay fueled for life’s adventures. Our favorite ideas are granola bars, fruit, beef jerky, or hard candy.

But we also love to have foods available in our house for family members with special food allergies. Some snack foods are great for most dietary needs like plantain chips, jolly ranchers, and pretzels. But other foods are specific for gluten-free individuals.

This summer we have added several new brands to our rotation of family snacks.

Check out Uncle Jerry’s Pretzels, a family-owned business famous for their handcrafted, all-natural sourdough pretzels from rural Pennsylvania. For over 30 years, they’ve stayed true to traditional baking, free from oils, sugars, and preservatives, winning the hearts of pretzel lovers and health-conscious snackers alike.

Congo Tropicals’ Plantain Chips deliver the crunch you crave with high fiber, potassium, and energy while staying low in cholesterol—making them a guilt-free treat. With six flavors to choose from, there’s something for everyone!

Chocolate Honeygrams are delicious gluten-free graham-style crackers coated in dark chocolate and made with real honey that fit perfectly into a back-to-school routine to be children’s new favorite sweet snack!

Portable Battery Pack

Communication is key in our current world. When the kids head off to school, college, or adventures, I want to know that we can always communicate. Each of our kids has a portable battery pack that will ensure their phone battery stays charged.

Body Wipes

If your student has PE during the school day, then an individually wrapped deodorizing body wipe may come in super handy.

Flashlight

You never know when the electricity may go out and your student will be in the school’s basement or in a crowded auditorium. When the kids were in middle school I was accompanying for a school-wide performance in the school auditorium and the electricity went out. All the students started screaming and squealing. The teachers pulled out their phones but it was hard to see where the exits were backstage where the performers were. I pulled out my flashlight and helped direct us off-stage till the lights came on. A flashlight in a backpack or purse is invaluable.

Our current favorite brands for flashlights are Phoenix and Streamlight.
