Why I’m Tracing the Bible
I have always been someone who runs on full throttle. I am always multitasking and checking things off my list. Sometimes that type-A mindset even spills over into my devotion time with God. There’s just always more things to do than I have time to get it done.
I have been doing my devotional time/Bible time every morning the same way for years. I read at least a chapter and stop when I find a verse that makes me think. I make a date in the margin, underline the verses that are special for the day, and then start my day.

If you have ever sat out on our back porch, you can understand why I feel like this is the best place to have a quiet time each morning. A cup of hot tea, pillows on the bench, and a blanket when it’s a bit chilly.

But recently I received something new to me – a tracing Bible. What if instead of just reading God’s Word, I also wrote the scriptures each morning? When you write something, you have to slow down and actually process the words instead of just reading them, and sometimes if we’re honest, just checking them off since we’ve read them a million times.
I’ve never been a person who loves to journal. I’m not a fan of handwritten notes, probably because I am always moving so fast that I have trouble reading my own handwriting.
When I received the tracing Bible, I thought I would give it away. Maybe my daughter or one of her friends would enjoy this new approach to a quiet time. But then, I took a pen on the first day and wrote my first verse.
There are a couple of things I learned immediately.
- You can’t rush the tracing experience. If you get in a hurry, the letters blur together, and it is hard to read.
- The right pen matters. You need something that doesn’t bleed or smear.
- I’m not trying to trace the entire New Testament. Instead, my approach is to trace the phrases, verses and sections that stick out to me.

This is a new experience for me to try to trace God’s word, and I’m really enjoying it. I don’t know if this is something I will do forever, but for this season, I am loving the time that I spend slowing down to write God’s Word.
When the Bible tells us to write His Word on our hearts, I’m not sure if God was being literal, but I am learning that slowing down and writing the Bible is a brand-new adventure, and I’m here for it!
