Unsung Hero Movie Review + Giveaway

As soon as I saw the first whispers of Unsung Hero I knew it was a movie that I wanted to see. It had everything that grabs me about a Christian movie: a real story that gives a behind-the-scenes look at people who live in the spotlight. I was so excited to receive a link to this movie before release in exchange for an honest review. All in all, the film wasn’t groundbreaking or revolutionary, but it was very entertaining and heart-warming and worth a watch.

The movie started out a bit slow for me. There was some cutting back and forth that made the timeline feel confusing and disjointed. It took a bit for the characters and story to find their footing. Once they found their stride, the family dynamic felt very real and authentic. I especially loved watching the young characters that would eventually become For King and Country. Luke’s actor in particular was especially talented.

There was one plot point that I didn’t quite find believable and would have liked for the movie to spend more time developing. It felt to the viewer as if Rebecca was being forced into music instead of taking to it because of passion. The storytelling could have been tightened up here.

Other than that, I would say the biggest thing going for this movie is that it feels so real. It’s not hard to believe that this is a real family facing real struggles. They react in real ways. Their struggles are authentically portrayed. This also acts as a weakness. In places, the storyline just feels too real. There’s no whimsical magic to it. If you’re looking for a complex story, this isn’t it. But if you want a sweet, simple family story, this is for you.

The movie’s conclusion is as heart-warming and gentle as the movie that preceded it, but still satisfying. The end credits do a great job showing where life took this family. I also have to give props to the Smallbones in real life: not many people have the courage to take some of the most difficult times in their lives and put it on the big screen. They even stayed involved in the project, acting and directing in it. All the heart that went into making it shines through beautifully. I say well done to all that worked on this project. It was an enjoyable two hours of my life.
