Tell Me You’re a Gardener

How do you know if you are a true gardener at heart? Is this a passing interest or are you an all-in, hopeless, lost cause fanatical gardener? How can you tell me you’re a gardener without saying a word? Here are a couple of things we all share when we have perpetual dirt under our fingernails and a cabinet full of mason jars!

You can’t pass up a new pack of seeds

Can you walk past a seed display in the store or pass up a seed catalog without dreaming, planning or buying a new pack of seeds? If not, then you are definitely a true gardener! It doesn’t matter what time of year it is… if I see a collection of seeds, I will stop what I’m doing and check it out. After all, this may be the year my winter greenhouse grows a seasonal supply of lettuce!

If this describes you, then you may be interested in a subscription seed box. Did you know you can have seeds sent to you every month? Talk about feeding the dream!

Each SeedBank Box has between 8-10 varieties of seed packets with a description card and instructions for planting. Everything from root vegetables, vining vegetables, fruit plants, leafy greens, edible flowers, rare heirloom varieties, even medicines, the possibilities are endless. I love that the instruction card matches the color of the seed packet making it easy to keep track of what is included!

You keep adding garden books to your TBR list.

Even when I’m in the middle of garden and canning season, I can’t pass up a new garden-themed book. I browse them quickly when I receive them, then add them to my bookshelf to dig into as soon as the snow starts to fall and there’s more time to sit on the couch with my favorite afghan or homemade quilt.

These books serve two purposes. Not only do I get good reference information about what to plant where and how to do certain tasks, but I also love the aspirational aspects of gardening books. Who doesn’t love dreaming about how to create their perfect outdoor patio room or plant a meadow that looks amazing?

Even the kids can tell a weed vs flower

From planting the first seed in new garden beds and watching the plants grow, to picking weeds and harvesting the produce, gardening with kids is such a rewarding experience. When even the kids can recognize the weeds and name the flowers and vegetables, you know you’re definitely a true gardener!

You get asked “What else can we taste?” by every guest

True story: One of the first questions my nephews ask when they visit is what else have you made that we can taste?

  • Pickled okra? check
  • Fresh cucumbers? definitely
  • Cinnamon pickles? of course
  • Blackberry jam AND jelly? always

A true gardener always has something to snack on and of course, we’re always looking up ways to try something new fresh out of the garden!

How do you tell me you’re a gardener without saying a word? I’d love to see and hear your stories! Happy gardening friends!
