Garden Boots & Books: Ready for Spring Planting
Spring has officially arrived! The days are longer, the birds are singing, and it’s time to swap out the winter layers for a good pair of garden gloves. After our recent move, I’ve been gathering up all my garden tools (which somehow managed to scatter themselves into every corner of the barn, shed and basement), dusting off the tiller, and getting ready to dig in.
There’s just something about this time of year that calls you outside. The soil’s warming up, and it’s time to get those garden beds ready for another season of growing.

Garden Boots & Books: Ready for Spring Planting
Let’s Talk Dirt
First on the list? Tilling the garden—but this year is extra special. We’re in a new home on the farm, and this garden plot has never been tilled before. It’s a fresh start in what we hope is the perfect sunny spot, but as every gardener knows, you never really know until you get in there and see how the soil feels under your hands (and how well the plants take to it).
There’s something exciting about breaking new ground—literally. It’s full of potential, and I’m looking forward to seeing what this space becomes as the season unfolds. The tiller is ready, my tools are (finally) gathered after the move, and I’m ready to get this new garden going.
These Boots Are Made for Gardening
If you’ve followed along for any length of time, you know I love my Muck boots. They’ve been with me through mud, rain, and working all over the farm. But it’s time to finally replace them.

Muck has just released a new Duck Camo print in their 100% waterproof, 100% MUCKPROOF line. Same rugged, reliable boots—just with a bold new pattern that adds a bit of fun to the function. Perfect for early spring mornings when the ground is still soggy but I’m ready to get to work.
You can check out the full new lineup here: Muck Duck Camo Collection. They’ve got all the classic styles, now with a little extra personality.
Garden Reading: Start with Soil
After a good day of working in the garden, I like to settle in with a book (usually with a hot cup of mint tea or my ginger-infused water bottle close by). This season, I’ve been digging into “Start with Soil: Simple Steps for a Thriving Garden“ by Juliet Sargeant.
I’ve always known that soil is the heart of the garden, but this book is making me rethink just how important it is—and how easy it is to take it for granted. Juliet makes soil science approachable and practical, with at-home tests, compost tips, and simple projects like No Dig gardening and Hugelkultur (if you’ve never tried it, it’s worth a look!).
It’s the kind of book that makes you want to go outside and check on your compost pile—or at least peek under the mulch to see what’s going on down there.

Inspiration for the Season: 2025 Garden Guide
And because I’m always looking for fresh ideas, I grabbed the 2025 Garden Guide. It’s packed with inspiration, from mood-boosting gardening tips to debunking common hacks we’ve all seen floating around. It even touches on things like rethinking peat and visiting some of North America’s most beautiful gardens (which has me dreaming of a few road trips).
If you’re ready to grow your happy place, this guide is a great place to start. It’s available now wherever books and magazines are sold.
Time to Dig In
So here we go. Boots on, tiller fueled up, tools gathered. Whether you’re starting a new garden or picking up where you left off, this is the perfect time to get your hands in the dirt and start something new.
What’s on your planting list this season? I’d love to hear what you’re growing—let’s swap ideas and keep each other inspired.
Happy gardening!
