Weekend Breakfast at the Farm

If you come to our house on a Saturday morning, chances are we’ll have homemade biscuits and jelly with bacon, eggs, and a hot cup of coffee. Or maybe we’ll have a blackberry muffin or blueberry waffles with hickory syrup.

And now that my new bowls from Wayfair have arrived, our weekend breakfast has gone up a notch. Now it not only tastes good, but it makes a beautiful counter as well.

Weekend Breakfast at the Farm

My mom has always made homemade biscuits because her mom did. So, of course, I grew up knowing how to make them as well. When people talk about buying frozen or canned biscuits, my kids are pretty surprised. It’s just so easy to make them from scratch that we have rarely bought them from the store.

We have our personal favorite ways to make homemade biscuits:

  • Self-rising flour, Crisco, and milk. I really don’t have measurements. You need enough flour to fill about half of a mixing bowl, about 1/4 cup of Crisco, and enough milk to make the flour and Crisco stick together and form a dough. Pat them out, cut circles, and cook at 400 degrees until nice and golden brown on top.
  • The second way we like to make homemade biscuits is with self-rising flour and heavy whipping cream. Just mix these up, make a good dough, and cut them into biscuits.
  • I also make biscuits with all-purpose flour and butter, and they are good, but these two are our favorites.

Tip: I love my silicone baking mat that helps me keep the flour from my biscuits contained. Clean up is so much easier!

Now let’s talk about my new mixing and serving bowls that I just ordered from Wayfair. They came as a set of three ceramic bowls in bright, cheerful colors, and I love how they nest together so they don’t take up much space in the cabinet. The sizes are perfect for everything from mixing biscuit dough to tossing a quick salad or serving something on the table. They’re sturdy, easy to use, and I can easily wipe them clean and stack them inside each other.

I love a pop of color with my plates and bowls. A few years ago, I discovered that Fiesta plates and bowls are sturdy and last forever, and the color makes them fun to use. I’ve been watching the classic Pyrex mixing bowls that nest together, but there’s a lot of talk about the fact that they probably contain lead. I don’t feel comfortable serving my family from those bowls right now, so I’m excited to use these new bowls from Wayfair.

Tip: If you have summer gnats and flies, these wire mesh food cover tents are perfect. I have several of the solid color food cover tents from Amazon but couldn’t pass up these specialty covers that I found at a yard sale several years ago!

Do you enjoy using colored bowls, plates, and dishes when you serve breakfast and make meals for your family? Since we live rural, we don’t eat out very often, so when we are enjoying a home-cooked meal, I want it to feel special with low effort.

If you’re in the area, make sure you give us a call. Maybe we can make a batch of homemade biscuits and serve some fresh blackberry jelly!

Spread the love
