DIY Bench Refresh: Just Add Stain
I’ve had this teak bench for over 10 years. This bench has lived a good life—been sat on, moved around, and eventually tucked away in the garage for “someday.” Well, this week, “someday” finally showed up, and I decided it was time to give it a little love.
It’s amazing what a simple can of stain can do. I didn’t need fancy tools or a big budget—just a rag, some stain, and a little bit of time.

DIY Bench Refresh: Just Add Stain
Materials Needed:
- Wood furniture
- Wood stain
- Brush or rag

Directions
- Clean it off: First things first—this bench was dusty. I wiped it down with a damp rag to get all the dirt and cobwebs off. You can lightly sand if you want to, but I just went straight in.

- Ventilation is key: I started in the garage with the door open, but once the sun came out, I moved the whole project outside.
- Wipe on the stain: I used a rag to start and then switched to a brush about halfway through the project and just wiped on the stain. The wood soaked it up and immediately started looking richer and cleaner.
- Add coats till you like the look: I did a couple of coats until it looked the way I wanted. Just make sure you let it dry in between.

- Let it dry completely: Once you’re happy with how it looks, let it dry all the way. You don’t want to sit on it too soon and end up with a stain line on your clothes!
Now this bench is front porch worthy again, and I’m excited to use it this spring. It’s a little thing, but it made a big difference.
