Blending the Past into the Present with Love

When I was growing up, my Grandmother wrote long handwritten letters telling of her life adventures. I forgot about these letters and didn’t realize my Mom had saved them back. Recently Mom gave them to me and I’ve been reading through them little by little. A few days ago, I read one that told of her memories of a simple time in life. A time when she was little and life was hard but it was good. She ended the letter with the words “blending the past into the present with love, Grandmother”.

That phrase caught my attention because that’s what I feel is important. I love blending the things of past generations with our everyday life.

Blending the Past into the Present with Love

One of the ways I love to blend the past and present is to use something old that has memories when we have new experiences with the family. Growing up when we would go to a picnic with my grandparents, we would use this tablecloth. Over the years, it has seen so many adventures. A few years ago, this tablecloth ended up in my house and I get to use it for our family picnics.

Merge the past with the present by adding a new cutting board that can be used for fruit, chocolate, cheese or sandwich meat.

Picnics with Grandmother would have looked a bit different than this, but what a fun way to serve fruit and chocolate – because we all know that no picnic is complete without a little dessert to finish it off.

Handcrafted by professional craftsman, this Medium Olive Wood Serving & Cutting Board is made from genuine olive wood and features a thick cutting surface,

Use Your Family Quilts

I have inherited some favorite quilts and afghans from my grandmother, great grandmother and other family members through the years. Instead of keeping them stored in a chest of drawers, I rotate them on the end of my bed and even use some of them on my couch. These don’t go out on picnics or to the farm but I would rather enjoy them each day instead of save them for some distant future time.

Wear your Favorite Jewelry

Do you have special necklaces or bracelets that have been handed down from other generations? Wear them! I have a special necklace that was my grandmothers but I didn’t really want to wear it as a necklace. So instead, I am turning it into bracelet that I can enjoy.

With some simple jewelry clasps and fishing wire, this is an easy way to blend the past into the present.

What are some ways you blend the past and the present? Do you have flower vases, picture frames or vintage furniture that you have inherited that you enjoy using in your daily life? Don’t you love preserving the memories of the past with the new experience you are making in your life? I’d love to hear your stories!

Spread the love
