Winter Family Time Ideas
When the kids were younger, and winter would have long, chilly nights stuck inside, we spent lots of time in the basement to fill the evenings with family fun. We’d set up the cornhole boards and have some pretty stiff competition. We even kept a running scoreboard—parents versus kids. With music playing on a Bluetooth speaker, the basement quickly became our favorite place to laugh, play, and make memories.

Winter Family Time Ideas
Now that we’re in our new house, we don’t have quite as much space downstairs, but that hasn’t stopped us from keeping the tradition alive. We still have the ping pong table, so now it’s time to start building the game options again.

Bring the Game Indoors
This ESPN Pro Competition Dual Over the Door Hoop turns any doorway into a mini basketball arena. The extra-large acrylic backboard, dual hoops, and built-in scoreboard make it perfect for quick games of HORSE, one-on-one challenges, or family tournaments. It even includes four mini basketballs (two red, two white) and a pump, so everyone can join in. And when the game’s over, the hoops fold up for easy storage—ideal for bedrooms, playrooms, or basements where space is tight.
If basketball isn’t your thing, try one of these other easy indoor favorites:
- Ping pong – a classic that keeps everyone moving.
- Cornhole – if you have the space, it’s always a hit.
- Darts – only need a small patch of wall.
- Card games or board games – set up a folding table and grab a deck of cards or a Monopoly board.
The key is keeping it simple. Family fun doesn’t have to be expensive or elaborate—it just needs laughter, a little competition, and maybe some background music.
Keep Score & Grow Something New
Every game night needs a scorekeeper, right? Instead of grabbing a regular pencil, hand out a Sprout Plantable Pencil. Once it gets too short to write with, you can plant it and watch it grow into a flower, herb, or even a small tree!
SproutWorld has created the world’s only plantable pencil—made from sustainably harvested wood, non-toxic graphite, and a seed capsule made from plant-based material. It’s a simple way to give new life to something that would otherwise be tossed away.

After months of game nights and scorekeeping, plant your used pencils in the spring and watch your memories grow—literally! Every sprout becomes a reminder of family time spent together, laughter shared, and games won (or lost).
Don’t overlook the fun of a good old-fashioned puzzle. Just spread out the pieces and let the family bring the picture to life.
Winter nights don’t have to be dull. Whether you’re shooting hoops over the door, working a massive puzzle, keeping score with a pencil that will bloom come spring, or just sitting around the table playing cards, what matters most is the time together. Memories last forever—and sometimes, if you plant them right, they even grow.
