Best Games for Family Gatherings

Tis the season for family gatherings, get togethers and mini holiday reunions. One of the best parts about getting together is finding ways to laugh and make memories. I love when we get to spend time with the aunts, uncles, grandparents and cousins. It gets loud sometimes with all the noise of the chatter, laughter and good natured competition, but the memories last a lifetime! Here is a look at some of the best games for family gatherings that you may want to share at your next event.

Best Games for Family Gatherings

A good family party game will involve alot of people, very little planning or supplies and easy to learn rules. If something is complex or takes too long to play, you will lose the attention span.

Here’s a quick look at some of our recent get togethers on the Oldham Side. You will see that we are a very quiet bunch.

And I must come clean that occasionally we will use sign language to help the little kids get the right cards. If you look closely, you might just see me signing the cards that my Dad and son are needing. Hmmm… I guess I wasn’t being very subtle.

Spoons

You can play this game using plastic spoons found over near the food at most family get togethers. It’s super simple. Just pass around the cards until you get 4 of a kind. Then sneak out a spoon before anyone else sees you. Last one without a spoon is out! Just remember that the more people you have playing, the more decks of cards you will need!

Got a Spoons fan on your Christmas list? You can even buy the game to get them started so they don’t even have to use their own spoons! Talk about a fun gift!

Play this classic card game where you race to get four-of-a-kind and you have to snag a spoon to stay in the action. Each round somebody will be eliminated, so be sharp, but be thankful that the spoons aren’t.

Pit

We love to play Pit! It’s been a family favorite since I was a kid. Sure, it’s loud and obnoxious to the people who aren’t playing, but if you’re in the game, there’s just nothing quite like it. The rules are easy to learn. Just pretend you’re on the trading floor trying to collect as many of each product as you can get. There are no turns in this game. You just ring the bell and everyone plays at once.

Jenga

Jenga is a classic party game. You build the tower and then let everyone take turns as they pass by. It is addictive and perfect for family get togethers. You can even upgrade your typical Jenga tower with the newer version, Jenga Throw n Go!

There are many variations of Jenga available. But the idea for each game is the same. You build a tower and try to keep it from falling.

Other Favorites

There’s no family gathering that is complete without a hard fought game of Rook. Depending on which side of the family we are with, we might be playing Red 1, All 1’s, or Rook High.

Skipbo, Phase 10, Apples to Apples and Scattegories Cards also make the list of fun family party games.

What games do you love to play at family get togethers? After writing this post, I’m ready for some time with family so we can play some more games! I’d love to hear your favorites!

Thanks to my family who are such good sports about me sharing our laughter and fun times!

Spread the love
