Best Washington DC Hotel Option
On our recent trip to Washington DC we struggled at first with the decision of where to stay while we were touring the city for the week. We debated the pros and cons of staying inside the city or outside the beltway and using public transportation. The decision to stay in Springfield, Virginia just made sense for us on several levels. If you are traveling to Washington DC, take a look at the reasons Springfield, Virginia Homewood Suites is a great option!

Best Washington DC Hotel Option
When you pick a hotel for a week long trip to the Capital, you need to consider several things. You need to decide if you want the proximity of the local city attractions or if you prefer to stay outside the city and travel in each day. Something to note: it is typically more expensive the closer you are to downtown Washington DC. Springfield, Virginia is located right on the Metro line and easy to pick up public transportation for all your daytime adventures.
Homewood Suites gave us the flexibility we needed to explore the city and yet come out of the city each evening to our lodging.
Transportation Options
Homewood Suites offers a free shuttle service to the Metro which allowed us to park our car and not worry about traffic the entire week. We were able to take the blue line into the city each morning and come back to the Franconia-Springfield stop each evening. Tip: You can call the hotel and ask for shuttle service when you reach the Van Dorn Street stop. This gives the shuttle enough time to come pick you up.
If you want to use the shuttle to local restaurants, just ask at the hotel guest desk. The shuttle service is free but tips are appreciated.
There is a nice lobby area where you can wait in the mornings before catching the shuttle to the Washington Metro for your daily adventures.
Amenities
When we travel, we often pack light and then do a load of laundry about halfway through the trip. There is a laundry room right down the hall from the indoor pool. This was a perfect set up so the kids could enjoy swimming while I caught up on a quick load of laundry.
*There was a lifeguard on duty while the kids were swimming!
The fitness center is fully equipped and ready for an end of the day work out.
Food Options
Homewood Suites serves a full hot complimentary breakfast. This is a great way to save some money in your food budget for the day while getting a delicious meal to start your day.
When you are tired after a day of exploring in the city, you need food options close to the hotel. There are several great restaurants within walking distance of the hotel. Be watching for a full post next week sharing the restaurants we enjoyed.
Lodging
At the end of the day, we need a place to stretch out and get a little space from each other. We loved the Queen suite which gave us the extra living room area. The rooms are comfortable and spacious and worked great for our family.
Tip: Make sure you sign up for Hilton Honors program so you can earn points and perks toward a free stay! On our way home, we were able to get a free night stay in the Hilton Family of hotels because of our earned points! Win-Win!
