Vintage Scrap Fabric Christmas Stocking
Last summer, my Mom brought me an old quilt that her mom made using leftover fabric from all the dresses that she had sewn over the years. The quilt was torn, the fabric was fragile, and it was way past being used as a blanket. Mom and I carefully pulled apart each of the rectangular-shaped pieces of fabric. This past weekend, I pulled out the remaining scraps and hoped I had just enough to create a Christmas stocking.

Vintage Scrap Fabric Christmas Stocking
When I say I had just enough scrap fabric left over to create a Christmas stocking, I am not joking. I was determined to not use any new fabric for the actual stocking, so I pulled out each of the scrap pieces and started piecing them together. The fabric is pretty fragile, so I used some interfacing to hold it together and give it some structure before I actually started cutting the pattern.

Materials Needed:
There are tons of free Christmas Stocking printable patterns online, but I found this one that worked perfectly. Just print out the four pages, cut, and tape them together.
- Vintage cutter quilt (cutter quilts are those quilts that are too ragged, torn and no longer able to be used as a blanket)
- Christmas Stocking printable pattern
- Scissors
- Low Loft batting (optional)

I found this YouTube video that shows how easy it is to make a lined Christmas stocking. You simply cut two pieces of the lining fabric and the quilt fabric. Since I wanted to have a more traditional quilt look, I also added a layer of low-loft batting.
I knew I had to really use each piece of the fabric scraps, so I constantly laid the pattern on top of the pieced fabric to check for the right size.
Once I finally had the shapes I needed for the stocking, I cut the cotton batting and used some tacky spray to hold the pieces in place. Did I mention that this fabric is very fragile at this point? I knew that using pins to secure the quilt top to the batting would tear the fabric, so the tacky spray was a better option.

I found some vintage red pattern fabric from an earlier estate sale this summer to use for the lining and followed the tutorial.
When I say I used every last scrap, this is what is left. I love that I was able to get multiple pillows, bags, and now a Christmas stocking from a quilt that was too tattered and worn to be used.

I really love the way this turned out. I think it may be my favorite one yet. I’m really quite impressed that I found enough scraps to make both sides of the stocking.
Did you see my first two Christmas stockings out of vintage quilts? I can’t wait to decorate for the holiday season in just a few months!

How to Make Christmas Stockings from Vintage Quilts
I made Christmas stockings for each of the kids when they were young, but we have been needing new ones for several years. Over the past few months, I’ve been seeing several Christmas stockings at antique stores made out of vintage quilts. Since I have several family quilts that are special but way too ragged…
