Pumpkins Over Goblins: Fall Décor I Love
October is almost here, and that means pumpkins, fall leaves, corn mazes, and cool evenings on the farm. While many people love decorating with ghosts, goblins, and spooky vibes, I’ll admit that’s not really my thing. I’d much rather lean into the cozy side of autumn. Give me pumpkins, straw bales, and that crisp October air every time.

My favorite quote for this season comes from Anne of Green Gables: “I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.” And really, isn’t that the perfect reminder? October deserves to be celebrated. The best part is you don’t have to overwhelm your house (or your storage room) with boxes of seasonal décor to make it feel festive. Here are my favorite ways to decorate for fall when you’re not into the goblins and ghosts.
Decorate Small
When it comes to seasonal decorating, sometimes less really is more. I don’t want to spend hours pulling decorations out of boxes, only to feel like I’m drowning in knickknacks. A few small touches are all it takes to bring fall into your home.
Think drawer pulls with pumpkins, a simple sign with my favorite Anne of Green Gables quote, or a decorative iron pumpkin on the counter. Handmade pieces, like a pumpkin crafted from repurposed jar lids spray-painted gold, add character and charm without being over the top.
Small décor gives you all the joy without the stress. You’ll actually spend more time enjoying your decorations than managing them.
Fit Your Family Vibe
Every family has a different way of celebrating the season, and that’s exactly how it should be. If your people love spooky décor, then by all means, bring out the goblins. But if your family is more of a pumpkin patch, corn maze, and fall leaves crew, then keep your fall decorations in line with those traditions.
That’s the beauty of fall—it’s versatile. For some, it’s about haunted houses and bats in the windows. For others, it’s about cozy nights with quilted pumpkins, plaid tablecloths, and a wooden pumpkin sign on the mantel. One of my favorite finds on Etsy is a rustic pumpkin sign that feels more farmhouse than fright.
The key is to decorate in a way that feels natural to your home and family. You don’t have to keep up with the neighbors or copy what you see in every store aisle. Keep it real and keep it you.
The One Tote Rule
When we moved to the farm, we downsized in a big way. That’s when I made my “one tote rule.” If the holiday décor doesn’t fit in one tote, then I don’t want it. I’m not interested in storing mountains of plastic pumpkins or kitschy ornaments that only clutter the space.
Instead, I keep it simple. A classic straw scarecrow on the counter. A few crocheted pumpkins. Maybe a wooden sign or two. That’s enough to bring the season into focus without overwhelming me.
The one tote rule keeps decorating manageable and intentional. It also makes it easier to pack things away when the season changes.
Enjoying October
The truth is, fall decorating doesn’t have to be complicated. A few pumpkins here, a cozy sign there, and suddenly the season feels alive in your home. October is about slowing down, soaking in the beauty of the leaves, and enjoying moments that feel timeless.
So whether you decorate with goblins or gourds, keep it simple and true to your family. For me, I’ll always choose pumpkins, scarecrows, and that beautiful reminder from Anne Shirley: “I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.”
What about you? How do you decorate for the October season?
