Whether you are an avid horse fan who follows the racing industry, love the amazing horses that impress us on the track and in the stable or simply fascinated by the racing history in central Kentucky, one of the best ways to learn about the Kentucky Derby is at the Kentucky Derby Museum in Louisville, Kentucky located at Churchill Downs.
The Kentucky Derby Museum is located on the property of Churchill Downs. On non racing days, it is easy to find free parking in the lots right outside the gates. It is always advisable to check the website before you visit so you will know the best places to park and if there are any road closures due to city events.
You can choose the tickets you want that best accommodate your physical limitations, time and money. The General Admission tickets gives you access to the Museum, Gift Shop and a 30 minute walking tour that takes you out to the Churchill Downs racetrack and grand stand. If you want a more in-depth tour, you can purchase tickets for the Barn and Backside tour or the Behind the Scene Tour that takes you even closer to the racing experience.
You begin your tour in the Museum that covers two floors of exhibits. You can learn about the racing legends that won each of the Kentucky Derby races and see many of the trophies and memorabilia from your favorite Derby winner, trainer and jockey.
But don’t think that the Kentucky Derby Museum is just for horse racing fans. There are plenty of interactive exhibits that are geared toward the younger crowd. Dress like a jockey, ride a horse, test your knowledge and even try your hand at calling a race.
One of the highlights of the Kentucky Derby Museum is the 360° video experience that takes you on a journey of the thoroughbred’s life and puts you right in the middle of the Derby.
Hold on to your Derby hats for a thrilling immersive sound and visual experience, “The Greatest Race™”! Projected larger-than-life in one of the world’s only 360°, 4K extremely high resolution theaters, it’s an 18-minute experience that will send your heart racing and emotions soaring.
