How to Starch Vintage Crochet Stars
Recently, my mom gave me a box of stuff she had been saving as she cleaned out a closet. In it was a little baggie of what looked to be a pile of yarn. When I opened it up and pulled out the pile, I found 40 delicate crocheted stars that grandma had made at least 20 years ago. The stars were all piled together and didn’t look like much till we started pulling each one apart.

How to Starch Vintage Crochet Stars
My grandma was always working on a project – a quilt, an afghan or maybe a rag basket or pajamas for the grandkids. Many years ago, she gave me a metal fruit cake can with some tiny crochet hooks and intricate lace and doilies she had created many years ago. I knew she used to crochet the dainty stitches with tiny crochet hooks but didn’t realize she had made things like Christmas stars while I was in college.

Finding this pile of Christmas stars was like finding a treasure or gift just for us to enjoy all these years later.

Mom and I pulled out a piece of foam board and some straight pens and started the task of straightening out one star at a time.
Materials needed
- Crocheted hearts
- Spray starch
- Straight pins
- Wax paper
- Foam board or cardboard
Directions
Spread out each star and use straight pins to hold the star in place

Spray the starch over the entire star

Let it sit for at least 12 hours so the starch completely dries,
Display on a garland or on your Christmas tree. I tucked several on the tree and then added others to the greenery and lights on our stairs.

I love using something that my grandma made so many years ago. It just feels kind of special, don’t you think?
What would you do with these special crochet stars? I’ve got a few more and need a few more unique ideas.
