Bathtub Herb Garden (part 3)

Remember the bathtub that we rescued from the marsh? It’s been so satisfying to pull it out of the mud, move it into the nursery, and now fill it up so I can plant seeds and see what will grow. This past weekend, I got it ready to plant and now it’s time to see what happens. Here’s my part 3 update on my bathtub herb garden.

Filling the Bathtub

There’s already a drain hole at the bottom and a significant crack down the bottom side of the tub. So I’m not really worried about water standing after the rain. So I filled up the bottom 6 inches with chinking from the old 1880’s farmhouse that we took down after we bought the farm.

Wear the Right Boots

I have loved Muck Boots for almost 10 years and this Chelsea style Rainscapes boots is my newest favorite. They’re cute enough to wear if I need to run into town on a farm morning, but perfect to slip on and tackle my everyay chores whether it’s raining outside or just a bit muddy.

Then I piled on a second layer of logs from a maple tree that we cut down a few years ago.

The third layer is hay, grass clippings from farm cleanup last fall.

Then I was ready to add several bags of potting soil that I purchased last winter. We typically use bags of potting soil in my son’s truck for weight when the weather is unpredicatable and we need his truck to be a little heavier for possible snow.

I then planted some pansies, mint, lavender, basil, and other herbs from this pack of medicinal, tea and herb seeds that I ordered on Amazon.

I fully expect that the potting soil will fall down through the layers of the chinking and logs but I’ve got plenty of extra seed packets, so if these don’t germinate, I’ll plant new seeds.

Now it’s time to wait and watch it grow into something beautiful.

What do you think? Did I miss a step that you would recommend to give this bathtub the best chance for success? I’d love to hear!
