Green Bean Moments

Recently, a couple of us were walking around the farm talking about life and things we are learning. The story of my green bean moment came up and I realized I hadn’t shared here with you the lessons I am learning from growing green beans this summer. I think we have now coined a new phrase ‘green bean moments‘.

What is a Green Bean Moment?

I guess I should start at the beginning. I don’t really like green beans that you buy from the store. They just taste bland to me. But I love green beans that my father-in-law taught me how to can. When you go through the process of growing, picking, snapping, and canning each green bean, they just have a special taste that you don’t get from something canned in a factory.

I’ve gotten pretty fast at snapping green beans and can multi-task pretty good. Did you know that you can learn something like your next sewing/quilting project while snapping green beans?

But here’s where the green bean moment story starts. All summer I have fussed about my green beans. I really didn’t think I would have any grow this year. It had been too hot, too wet, too dry or too busy. The weeds were horrible and had grown almost as tall as the green bean vines. I just knew we would have no green beans all winter to enjoy and share with our family.

And then one day, I went out to the garden and saw that the vines were loaded. Not just a few green beans but enough to fill several baskets and bowls.

God didn’t need perfect conditions to grow green beans. He didn’t even need me to ‘trust the process’ or pull the weeds. He just did what He does best and works in the background,

Turns out, God can grow green beans even when the cirucmstances aren’t perfect. Sometimes He grows the harvest anyway.

“Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 1:6

Now every time I open one of these jars of green beans, I hope I remember that God doesn’t need perfection to do something amazing! He’s still working and will bring the work to completion!
