Tossed Nine Patch
For the past 4 months, Phyllis Shaw, the Querky Quilter from Stanford, KY has shared with you some great quilt patterns. This month Phyllis returns with another basic basic piecing patterns – the Nine Patch. These unassuming 9 little squares have become a standard for quilters across our country and its appeal spans generations. This month she will show you how to turn a simple Nine Patch into a stunning quilt that only looks complicated. Welcome, Phyllis!
Tossed Nine Patch
For the sample quilt pictured I selected 1930 reproduction fabrics. This is the quilt I made for my youngest daughter’s dorm room. She wanted a scrappy, homey, vintage feel so these fabrics worked perfectly. I knew it was a winner when she called home and said,” Mom, all the girls want to hang out in my room because it feels like home.”
My inspiration comes from Quilt in a Day’s pattern “Tossed Nine Patch.” These patterns are in stock at Simple Times.
Materials needed to make one 14.5 inch block.
- 5 inch squares of cotton fabric- each block requires 9. I love using Charm Square packs ( precut 5 inch squares) but this also makes a great use of scraps.
Usual piecing supplies: rotary cutter, quilt ruler, cutting mat, sewing machine, neutral thread…
Instructions
- Using a ¼ inch seam sew 5 inch squares together.
- # of 9-Patch blocks needed: Wall- 9, Lap- 12, Twin- 15, Queen- 20, and King-25
- Place 9-Patch block on cutting surface- cut in half lengthwise. Without moving cut pieces cut in half widthwise.
- Toss your 4 smaller blocks and sew back together. Experiment with your block pieces to see which configuration you like best.
Hint: Whatever fabrics you place in the corners of your 9-Patch those will remain uncut. I like to put a favorite or focus fabric in these places.
