Many years ago, I met a lady who had a dream of merging her love for miniatures, history, storytelling, art, and dollhouses to create an environment where people could come and experience something unique. Lori Kagan-Moore is living her dream and has created The Great American Dollhouse Museum – a ‘must-see’ destination in central Kentucky.

Great American Dollhouse Museum

Located in downtown Danville, KY, just minutes from the Boyle County Public Library, this museum is accessible and affordable.

With more than 200 intricately crafted dollhouses, room boxes, and miniature buildings, every exhibit invited us to slow down and notice the tiny details. From scenes depicting American history to an entire miniature town and an imaginative fantasy forest, there is always something new to discover around the next corner in the next window.

Each display is a work of art. Several displays really captured my attention. In one of the displays, you can see the story of a boy who has been caught with his slingshot. He has destroyed a glass gumball machine outside the general store. You can see the whole storyline – complete with the details of the glass breakage and the look of displeasure on the store owner’s face. If you look closely in the toy store window nearby, you can see the tiny dolls from popular nursery rhymes.

 

You know how much I love quilts, so it is not going to surprise you that I zeroed in on each of the tiny quilts and fabric room displays. I love the detailed craftsmanship of the tiny quilts, the bolts of fabric, and even the quilt on the hoop by the window. I still have the quilt hoops from my Grandma and love the memories. I even have a new quilt topper that is going into the hoop this weekend that I am excited to start on.

Entering Town of Copper Hollow

One of the highlights of the museum is Copper Hollow, a meticulously crafted miniature town that feels frozen in time. Set around the early 1900s, the town is filled with homes, businesses, shops, churches, and factories, each with tiny details that invite you to stop and look a little closer.

One thing I really love is that you can walk all the way around many of the displays. You don’t just see the front of the buildings—you can also look through the back and peek into each room. Every room is completely furnished, and every scene tells a story. We found ourselves going back to every display to see what tiny details we could discover next.

The final section of the museum takes you from American history into a completely different world. The heavily forested fantasy land is filled with faeries, elves, witches, trolls, and even a walk-in dragon cave. It was fun to slow down and see what magical surprises were tucked into each scene.

The attention to detail continues throughout this section, making it just as enjoyable for adults as it is for children. Whether you love fantasy stories or simply appreciate amazing miniature craftsmanship, this part of the museum is one you won’t want to rush through.

In order to appreciate the museum, you need to plan to take your time. It’s really one of those places that deserves multiple visits. You can purchase one-time admission tickets or do even better and become a museum member. There’s no way to absorb all the detail in one visit. We’re already planning a return visit the next time our extended family comes to town.
