How to Exercise While You Work from Home

When I first started working from home, I found myself sitting on the couch or at the table far too long. I felt like I was just watching my body get bigger and my exercise options disappear. But then I discovered a super affordable SurfShelf treadmill desk that lets me work at my laptop computer while I’m walking. This treadmill desk works great when I am working on certain projects, but the treadmill is noisy and the movement back and forth would be very aggravating to people on the other end of a conference call. Though it works great for many situations, there are sometimes when I need to burn calories but I don’t want anyone to see me exercise.

That’s when the DeskCycle comes in as the perfect solution. I received a DeskCycle recently and have been using it every day to sneak in bonus calorie burning exercise while I work. I am able to sit at my counter while I cycle even if I’m in a meeting. It makes no noise and can be adjusted for very low resistance or a tougher calorie-burning intensity. So even when I’m talking, I can keep on moving.

Since it takes up so little space, we keep the DeskCycle at the kitchen counter so any member of the family can do some pedaling while they are reading a book, playing the Xbox or just chatting about the happenings of the day. This is an easy way to help my entire family sneak in some extra calorie burning moments without having to go to the gym or basement.

Things to Know about the DeskCycle

  • The cycle is very quiet. I can’t hear it during operation at all. It is easily quiet enough to use while watching television or conducting meetings.
  • The cycle has a low profile making it perfect for working under a high desk or table.  I can’t use it under my kitchen table because my knees would hit the table, but it works perfectly when I am sitting at my kitchen counter.
  • There are 8 resistance settings so you can choose how hard you want to work.
  • Set up is easy and takes less than 15 minutes from out of the box to first use.

  1. Besides all the other tips I commented, it would be AWESOME to have this desk cycle especially because I need to spend a LOT of time at the computer and it’s hard to fit in the exercise I want and need because it’s hard to fit in all the other stuff I need to do in a day, so this would be an answer to a prayer for me, so that I could exercise while still getting the stuff I need to do done. Thanks for the chance.

  2. To exercise while working, I get up from my desk chair as often as I can to walk to other offices, deliver papers, etc. I also look out of the window to rest my eyes from the computer screen.

  3. Tracking how much activity I get through exercise or steps on an app helps keep me mindful to move my body when I normally wouldn’t think of it, such as when I am working on my laptop.
Even doing stretches is better than just sitting and typing.

  4. I also love isometrics because I can do those anywhere, including when sitting and doing my work and they don’t make me all sweaty and overheated or messed up and no one else can even tell I am doing them.

  5. I set a timer to move every twenty minutes. Also, I like to sit on a fitness ball instead of a chair but I can’t say that does much! 🙂

  6. I just walk around as much as I can. I really should take the stairs too. Maybe tomorrow!! kristiedonelson(at)gmail(dot)com Thank you.

  7. The best tip I have for getting exercise when I am working is to just set my alarm reminder on my Ipod every hour and then get up and walk FAST paced for a set timer of 5 minutes ( sometimes I alternate 1 min jogging and 1 min fast walking until the 5 min is up ) and sometimes I do about 2 other resistance/weight exercises too,
Unfortunately too often I feel like I don’t have time to get my online work done so I end up NOT doing those things despite the fact they are important to me, so this desk cycle would be an answer to a prayer for me. I could KEEP getting my work done even when short on time I would still be able to exercise at the same time and I would get a lot more of it in too!

  8. Oh this would be so helpful sitting at a desk all day. Whenever we get breaks and lunch, I get up and go for a walk. Feels great to get your legs moving!

  9. My tip would be to park at the end of the parking lot and get in extra steps walking into your building. Every step counts.

  10. I keep hand weights on the floor next to my desk and try and pick them up every once in a while and spend ten minutes using them. It helps stretch the muscles!

  11. WOW! As a single working Mama with 2 jobs winning this DeskCycle would be a Godsend! I have very little time for exercise or the gym and this would help me get fit so much easier as I work!

  12. I try to get up a couple times per hour and walk around the office. It’s so not easy to exercise while at a desk.

  13. Hmmmm, I don’t exercise like I should so don’t have any good tips. Maybe just take a break and take a walk. Any movement should help right?

  14. Definitely walking around, even in the hallway or around your building, after lunch and on 15 min breaks.

Also doing stretches in your chair like touching toes, hands up to the sky, squats in place, etc!
