Easy Quilted Pillow Sham

Remember that scrap, tattered, cutter quilt that Mom and I took apart a few weeks ago because it was too worn out to actually use as a quilt? That quilt has turned into lots of projects. The pieces of that quilt have made throw pillows and drawstring bags and now the latest project is a quilted pillow sham.

Easy Quilted Pillow Sham

Not interested in sewing your own, you can buy a quilted pillow sham on Amazon, and they are beautiful, but I love having fabric that has memories attached.

Materials Needed

Directions

Piece together enough fabric squares to make a large rectangle approximately two inches larger than your pillow. I ended up with a smaller pillow sham than I planned, but that’s okay.

Once you have your fabric topper, iron on the fusible web to make it stronger. This is important for a project like this because the quilt pieces are so old that they’re fragile. The fusible web gives them a little more stability before quilting.

After the topper and iron-on are fused, add a layer of pillow batting and quilt the entire quilt top. I used my sewing machine to sew straight lines, creating boxes about two inches apart across both the rows and columns.

Next, place the quilted piece right side up and find two pieces of fabric for the back. Overlap them and sew all the way around the edges. This creates a pocket so you can insert a pillow. Remember to keep right sides together while sewing.

Once sewn, turn it right side out and sew two seams all the way around the edges for a finished look.

If your pillow sham turns out large enough, you can insert a regular pillow. Mine was a little too small and tight, so instead I used extra pillow stuffing to fill it out.

Is it perfect? Nope. Is it just right for me? Yes.

This project only took a couple of hours, and now it’s so much fun to see it on the bed and couch (because I haven’t figured out where this will live yet.)

Have you ever made a quilted pillow sham? Do you have any tips? I’d love to hear.
