When you get to an estate sale on the last day, and everything is half off, including the fall flannel that has already been cut into strips and it’s only a quarter, you don’t waste a second snagging it. I could see the potential in this bundle of flannel strips, and there was no way I was missing out on this easy scrap flannel quilted pillow.

Easy Scrap Fall Flannel Quilted Pillow
We have had so much fun this year popping into estate sales on the last day because most of the time everything is half off the original price. And this estate sale did not disappoint. There wasn’t a lot of inventory left, but I hit the jackpot with this bundle of flannel fall-themed strips of fabric.
I laid it all out to see what I was working with and realized there was just the right amount to make a simple pillow. I think you would call this a jelly roll of flannel fabric?
One of the things about having strips of fabric like this is that you have an instant pattern. Just sew each piece together, add some batting and then use a zig zag stitch down each line to give it the puffy quilted look.
Tip: I have started using a tacky spray adhesive to keep my batting in place while I quilt so I don’t have to use straight pins. Makes it super simple.
Once I had the full fabric topper done and quilted, I folded the right sides together and sewed all around the square, leaving about 3 inches on one end open.
Snip the corners to give me crisp turns and then turn right side out. This extra open space allowed me to stuff the pillow batting inside and get the perfect firmness.
All that is left is a quick hand stitch to close in the opening, and there you have it – one fall flannel quilted pillow ready to toss on the couch with my fall rag quilt that I made years ago.
I’m super pleased and ready for the crisp fall weather and the beautiful colors of the changing trees! What do you think? Anything you would do differently?
Do you have too many plastic grocery bags in your kitchen? I’ve tried stuffing them in a wall organizer but they just seem to multiply and fall out in the garage. I decided that I could create a simple tie bag that I will store them in and celebrate my love for adventure at the…
I’ve been having so much fun using my sewing machine and finding beginner-friendly fabric projects to create. One of my recent projects was these simple Christmas fabric gift bags. These little bags are fun to make with scrap Christmas fabric that I found at one of the estate sales earlier this summer. Now I am…
We took our Yorkie to the groomers a few weeks ago and we were thrilled with how he smelled and looked. My boys were worried the groomer would send him home with a bow. But instead, he came home with an adorable bandana. We were thrilled with how cute he looked. I decided to see…
I’ve been seeing so many people share how they’re making their own Happy Birthday banners using scrap fabric, and I finally decided it was time for me to make one of my own using denim pockets. For the past 20+ years, every birthday in our family has looked about the same—plastic disposable banners, streamers, balloons,…
Several months ago, I was walking through an antique store when I noticed a drawstring bag made from old quilt pieces. It was simple, a little uneven, and clearly handmade, and I remember stopping and thinking that I wanted to make one of my own. Not with just any fabric, though, because I already knew…
For over 15 years, I’ve been saving my kid’s tshirts from special events. The character t-shirts from kindergarten and first grade? Got them! The t-shirt my daughter wore in her 3rd-grade play? Got it! The reward t-shirt from all the Accelerated Reader competitions? Yep, it’s been stored in the tote with all the rest. I’ve…
