South Central Kentucky Cultural Center: Glasgow, KY

You know how sometimes the best discoveries happen when you’re not even looking for them? That’s exactly what happened to us during a recent road trip when we found the South Central Kentucky Cultural Center in Glasgow.

We had driven over to browse through some antique stores and found ourselves wandering through Arts & Antiques Gallery.

I was excited when we stumbled across a Duncan Hines cookbook hidden among several other vintage cookbooks – you know how satisfying it is to find that one item you’ve been searching for, finally!

While we were checking out, we asked the lady at the counter if there was anything else we should see while we were in town. She recommended the South Central Kentucky Cultural Center, and we’re so glad we took her advice.

This free museum is completely donor-supported and volunteer-driven. The two-story museum is housed in what used to be an old pants factory, and they’ve done an incredible job transforming the space.

What to Expect on the First Floor

The first floor takes you on a walk through the history of the area. Having lived in Kentucky most of my life, I was fascinated to learn about the Barrens and the local history that I’d never really known. What I loved most about the exhibits is that they’re filled with actual pieces of history donated by local Kentucky residents who are passionate about sharing their family’s stories. It feels so much more personal than your typical museum displays.

The Second Floor is Impressive

The second floor is full of military memorabilia. There’s an extensive military display featuring weapons, uniforms, and artifacts from various world conflicts. They also have resources where you can learn about locals who participated in these military events – it really brings the history home when you can connect it to real people from the community.

As you wander through the second floor, you can also learn about the history of the pants factory itself.

But the real treat is walking through their recreated historical spaces – a general store, funeral home, doctor’s office, beauty salon, and other shops that would have been part of Kentucky communities throughout history. It’s like stepping back in time.

Practical Information

A few things worth noting: this museum is wheelchair accessible with wide aisles and an elevator. There are restrooms available on the main floor. Plan to spend 2-3 hours if you really want to enjoy everything they have to offer. They also have genealogy research areas available on request, which could be a goldmine if you’re researching family history.

We’ve been to many museums, including the Kentucky Historical Society and the Tennessee State Museum, along with others throughout the country, and this one ranks among the best we’ve visited. For a volunteer-run, donation-supported museum, the quality and scope of exhibits is really impressive.

Want a local meal when you finish touring the South Central Kentucky Cultural Center? We picked up a catfish dinner at Bully’s on Main St. This is our new favorite go-to restaurant for any time we are in Glasgow!
