How to Make Christmas Stockings from Vintage Quilts
I made Christmas stockings for each of the kids when they were young, but we have been needing new ones for several years. Over the past few months, I’ve been seeing several Christmas stockings at antique stores made out of vintage quilts. Since I have several family quilts that are special but way too ragged to actually use, it was an easy project to create.

Materials Needed:
- Christmas Stocking printable pattern
- Vintage cutter quilt (cutter quilts are those quilts that are too ragged, torn and no longer able to be used as a blanket)
- Scissors
- Low Loft batting (optional)
There are tons of free Christmas Stocking printable patterns online, but I found this one that worked perfectly. Just print out the four pages, cut and tape together.

Wedding Ring Quilt Christmas Stocking
For my first Christmas stocking, I pulled out the wedding ring quilt. This quilt still had enough of the batting, so it didn’t need to be lined. I simply cut two pieces using the pattern, sewed them right sides together, and then hand-sewed a simple loop.
This quilt is so fragile and is really falling apart that I won’t actually use this as a stocking. Instead, it will be hung on the stair rail as a festive, vintage decoration during the Christmas season.
It’s pretty crazy to me when I think that the last time this quilt was actively being cut and sewn was in the late 1930’s by my Grandma and her mom. This fabric is almost 100 years old and is now getting repurposed and loved in our holiday decorations in 2026.
I loved using pieces of this wedding ring quilt for the backpack keyfob and our window frame wall art. Now I’ve turned some of it into the Christmas stocking. There’s still quite a bit of the frayed fabric, stay tuned for a few other projects I have in mind to keep giving this quilt new life.
Blue Star Quilt
This blue star quilt was made by my husband’s great-grandmother at least 45 years ago. It was used on his bed his whole life and really shows the years of use. I knew it needed a lining so I found an old blue plaid shirt that I have been saving.
I found this YouTube video that shows how easy it is to make a lined Christmas stocking. You simply cut two pieces of the lining fabric and the quilt fabric. Since I wanted to have a more traditional quilt look, I also added a layer of low-loft batting.
This will be my go-to pattern for a lined Christmas stocking now. It was easy and turned out so nice. The turned-over cuff and the sewn-in hook make this stocking feel finished.
Personal tip: Make sure you sew in the loop on the right side of the stocking. Otherwise, you’ll end up with a stocking that is backward. Most people may not notice, but they will just feel like something is ‘off’. Trust me on this one. Taking the stitches out of the lining and reversing the loop took more time than the entire project.
Now I have two vintage quilt Christmas stockings. I want to make a couple more so I’ll have one for each of the family members in time for Christmas. As easy as these are, the hardest part will be deciding whether to make another one from the scraps of the wedding ring quilt or sourcing more tattered quilts.
