Happy Birthday Denim Pocket Reusable Banner

I’ve been seeing so many people share how they’re making their own Happy Birthday banners using scrap fabric, and I finally decided it was time for me to make one of my own using denim pockets.

For the past 20+ years, every birthday in our family has looked about the same—plastic disposable banners, streamers, balloons, tape, pins… and then it all gets tossed or shoved into a box until the next birthday rolls around. It worked, but now that we’re settled into our new farmhouse, I’ve been feeling the pull to start some new traditions.

I want fewer holes in the walls, less tape residue, and more things we can pull out and reuse year after year.

The Denim Pocket Idea

A few years ago, I cut the pockets off a bunch of old blue jeans and tucked them away in a box, thinking, “I’ll use these for something someday.” (If you’re a crafter, you know exactly how that goes.)

This was that project.

I pulled out one denim pocket for each letter to spell HAPPY BIRTHDAY, grabbed my box of saved scrap fabric, and got to work. There’s something really satisfying about using what you already have—especially when it turns into something fun and practical.

Materials Needed

  • Denim pockets (recycled and saved from old jeans)
  • Random fabric patterns and colors for the letters
  • Sewing machine
  • Pinking shears
  • Festive Ribbon

How I Made the Banner

I cut out the letters using my Cricut Maker, but honestly, you don’t need a cutting machine for this at all. You could just as easily print the letters on your computer, trace them onto fabric, and cut them out with scissors.

Once the letters were ready, I got to work:

  • Trimmed the edges of each denim pocket with pinking shears
  • Sewed one letter onto each pocket
  • Attached a ribbon to the top of each pocket so they can hang easily

That’s it. Simple, imperfect, and exactly my style.

A New Birthday Tradition

Now, for every birthday coming up in our farmhouse, we have a reusable birthday banner that actually means something—and I can officially retire the flimsy plastic banners for good.

It’s sturdy, colorful, and full of memories already… and I love knowing it will be part of our celebrations for years to come.

What do you think?
Have you made (or used) any reusable birthday banners that you pull out year after year? I’d love to hear what traditions you’ve kept—or what new ones you’re starting.

Spread the love
