Storm Prep for Spring

Spring in Kentucky means unpredictable weather. We may have 70 degrees today and 30 degrees tomorrow. It may be full storms with rain, thunder, and lightning, tornado warnings, or even a few snow flurries. This is normal and just part of the fun of changing seasons in April. We have lived through so many weather uncertainties that we don’t get too nervous when the storm predictions start coming in.

Storm Prep for Spring

There are some basic supplies that each family should have on hand to help prepare for spring storms. Whether you’re thinking about power outages because of high winds or tornadoes, it’s very possible to lose power for a few hours or even a few days.

The great news is that you don’t need a hefty budget to get prepped for spring storms. Just start planning today, and you’ll be ready before the crowds all run to Walmart to buy last-minute supplies.

Water

Having a solid backup for your water supply is essential for being ready for any emergency. Many people keep a couple of extra bottles of water on hand, but what happens if your water lines are compromised and you can’t drink from your sink or refrigerator filter?

That’s when you need to think about how much water you and your family need to get through 1–3 days. Store enough bottles of water so you won’t have to run to the grocery store when everyone else is panic buying and supplies are running low.

For longer-term emergencies, we have a Sawyer water filtration bag. This quick-flow bag will allow us to filter up to 100,000 gallons of water, so we can still have clean water even if the faucet water is no longer safe to drink.

Temperature Control

In spring, the temperatures are typically pretty mild, which means we don’t have to worry as much about extreme cold or heat. But that doesn’t mean we ignore temperature control.

If you have a wood-burning stove, kerosene heater, or propane buddy heater, think about having a backup for your heat source. Cut an extra pile of wood and have it ready, or purchase an extra gallon of kerosene or propane.

Losing electricity doesn’t mean you have to be uncomfortable if the power goes out.

Food
Many people keep enough extra food in their pantries that they won’t go hungry if they lose power for a few hours. But what happens if you don’t have access to your electric can opener, stove, or microwave? A little planning ahead will help you eat better in a storm.

Tip: Pick up a simple manual can opener and store it with your canned goods. That way you can find it easily if you need it during a spring emergency.

Keep simple food options on hand that don’t require electricity to prepare. You may not have access to a stove or grill, so plan accordingly. Peanut butter and crackers, mixed nuts for protein, or beef jerky all store well and make easy options when you need something quick.

Entertainment

One thing people often forget is entertainment during power outages. Yes, it may take longer to do everyday tasks, but there is also a lot of quiet time when the power goes out.

If you have young kids, this is the time to gather in a room with windows so you can take advantage of natural light. Pull out puzzles, games, or toys that the family can enjoy together.

Books are a great option for power outage nights. Just grab a flashlight or even an old-school oil lamp and enjoy the quiet.

Light

Think about your light options now, before you actually need them. When a storm is coming, everyone is looking for flashlights and batteries, and they can be hard to find.

Last winter, when an ice storm was predicted, a family member was in Walmart trying to find a flashlight and they were almost completely out of stock. That’s why now is the time to buy your light backups—before the storms arrive.

First Aid Kit

Spring storms often bring about new yard chores – especially if you live on a farm. You may need to use chainsaws to cut downed trees or can openers that you aren’t used to using. If someone gets to feeling sick during an emergency, you may not want to spend time digging through the medicine cabinet in the bathroom. Keep a well-stocked first aid kit in an easy-to-reach location, so you will be ready no matter what medical emergency comes up.

The SurviveX Large Pro First Aid Kit is a fully stocked emergency kit designed for the car, home, travel, camping, and outdoor adventures, with organized compartments for quick access when every second matters. Are you prepped for spring storms or are you just now thinking about what you might need? What are some other basics that people often overlook?
