Where to Find the Best Local Fruits and Vegetables
We love preserving summer produce so we can enjoy it throughout the winter. If you’ve ever opened a jar of homemade apple pie filling in January or cooked down a big pot of chili with tomatoes you canned back in July, you know how satisfying it feels. All the summer work pays off when you taste that fresh flavor in the middle of winter.
But here’s the challenge—where do you go to find the best locally grown fruits and vegetables?

I want to know that when I buy something labeled “locally grown,” it truly came from nearby farms. Unfortunately, I’ve noticed that even in some large grocery chains, such as Kroger or Walmart, the “local” produce often comes from hours away—or even out of state. That’s why I prefer buying from local farm stands, Amish produce sellers, and farmers’ markets.
Tip: Do a quick online search for “locally grown produce near me,” and you’ll likely find a list of farmers’ markets and produce stands you didn’t know existed. Most towns have Saturday morning farmers markets in their downtown squares during the summer and fall.
Here are a few of our favorite Kentucky spots to find fresh produce:
- Jackson’s Orchard – 1280 Slim Island Rd, Bowling Green, KY
Known for their fresh peaches and apples. You’ll also find local honey, jams, and preserves. We bought a ½ bushel of peaches here recently and can’t wait to start canning!
- Haney’s Appledale Farm – 8350 KY-80, Nancy, KY
Famous for their hot hand pies and wide variety of apples and peaches. A perfect Saturday drive destination. - Wengerd’s Farm Market – 2300 New Columbia Rd, Campbellsville, KY – No website
A simple covered outdoor stand open just a couple of days each week. Worth the trip for fresh, affordable produce.

- Huber’s Orchard & Winery – 19816 Huber Rd, Borden, IN (just north of Louisville)
A family favorite offering u-pick fruit, a farm market, and seasonal events.
- Hinton’s Orchard & Farm Market – 8631 Campbellsville Rd, Hodgenville, KY
Great selection of fruits, vegetables, and seasonal items. Known for their friendly staff and quality produce.
No matter where you shop, remember—fresh produce is worth the investment. Sure, you might find cheaper options at the grocery store, but you won’t get the same just-picked flavor. When winter ice storms have you stuck inside, nothing tastes better than opening a jar of summer goodness you bought fresh and preserved yourself.
So grab your baskets, check out your local stands, and enjoy the season while it lasts.
