Perfectly Imperfect Zipper Pouches

I seem to be learning a lot of lessons this year while I’m trying out new hobbies. I learned about trusting God even when I can’t see Him working as I’m growing green beans, and this week I learned that imperfections are just part of the process of God growing me. Let me tell you about my perfectly imperfect zipper pouches.

Zipper Pouch Imperfections

My Mom is an amazing seamstress… and so is my aunt… and my Grandma and my Grandmother and my great-grandmother, and the list goes on. Me? Not so much. I would probably put myself in the category of “I’m learning and always ready for a new attempt”.

One of the things I’ve never done is put in a zipper, but I have the cutest vintage fabric, and I found a huge box of zippers for only $4.00 at an estate sale this summer. So, of course, I wanted to try something new.

Instagram has been showing me these super cute zipper pouches that I really wanted to try. So what did I do? I called Mom and had her show me how to use a zipper foot and give me a lesson. Then, I looked for a YouTube teaching video and got started.

This video is amazing. I think I probably single-handedly tripled her views in one night. Once I had done the research, I was ready to get started.

Materials Needed

• Cotton batting
• Zipper
• Keychain ring

I’m not going to pretend that I’m an expert and try to teach you how to make a lined zipper pouch. But I will say that when I followed the directions exactly, the project turned out beautiful.

I even got fancy and decided to make a little zipper pull using some of the extra fabric and a key chain ring. I think they turned out cute. The exciting thing is that the zippers actually work!

As long as I was watching the video and following her instructions, I was doing pretty well. But when I decided to turn off the instructions and try it on my own, I got some interesting results. I guess that’s how it is with life and following God, too. When I stay focused on listening to His instructions, things just seem to turn out better.

I tried another pouch this past weekend and got the lining caught in the zipper. After wrestling with it, I finally took the zipper out and started again. On the next attempt, I somehow sewed the lining on the outside instead of the inside. I think I probably won’t go into a full-time business anytime soon. But I sure am having fun turning out these fun, perfectly imperfect zipper pouches.

Now, when Natalie and I are packing up our toiletries, makeup, or charging cords and a flashlight, we’ve got a fun zipper pouch to use instead of something random from the store.

I won’t deny that I’m pretty happy with how these turned out, and I can’t wait to get the sewing machine out again and make a few more. But this time, you better believe, I’ll remember to keep the tutorial on in the background reminding me what to do each step of the way!
