Arranging Flowers to Create Beauty
About 15 years ago, I met a lady named Anne who turned a peanut butter sandwich snack lunch into a royal tea party when I happened to be there unannounced. Another time, my husband and I were honored to visit in their home for dinner. At each place setting, there was a small glass vase with a single flower. I will always remember how special that table looked. Even now, if you come to my house for dinner during the summer, you may just find a small vase with a daffodil beside your glass.
Today, I’m honored to feature Anne and her love for arranging flowers to create a thing of beauty. What makes her so special is that she doesn’t think she does anything amazing? Take a look at some of her arrangements and I think you’ll agree that she has a special gift!

What led to my hobby?
I don’t remember…I have always taken what I found outside; flowers, grasses, blooming weeds, honeysuckle vines, branches and stuck them in a jar or water glass. I don’t think I called it flower arranging though. I was ‘stickin’ the grass blooms, vines and other items into what I had to bring the beauty of the outside inside.
I remember vividly my father in law saw me gathering up a bunch of weeds and grasses one day and asked me what was I doing. I told him I was going to bring them in the house. He told me in no uncertain terms to NEVER EVER bring in the blooms of the thistle weed. At that time I had no idea that it was an invasive plant, all I saw was a large, beautiful, purple bloom.
That was almost 50 years ago and I have learned a lot over the years. I now have my own flower gardens where I have everything from roses and flowering bulbs to various perennials, annuals and assorted grasses. You will find a fresh arrangement on my kitchen table from late February to Christmas.
Silk flowers are fun too, love making wreaths for the front and back doors to change with the seasons.
One good thing about flower arranging is you don’t need any special equipment or talent. A sharp kitchen knife, perhaps a pair of pruners, a recycled jar or a pretty vase is all you need.
I have been blessed to have taken my desire to bring the outside inside those many years ago and made it my life’s work. I am a landscape designer and Master Gardner. For several years I had a retail shop call “The Potting Shed”. While many of my friends are retiring I’m still working, I love creating areas of color around the city. At this time I’m not interested in retiring. Who will take care of the flowers if I don’t? Guess you could say it my passion!

Someday soon, I want to sit in the kitchen and share another peanut butter sandwich while we talk flowers, family and hobbies. Then of course, you’ll probably find us both working in the gardens while she teaches me ‘stuff’ I don’t know!
