6 Things We Keep on Our Farm Vehicle
We’ve been on the farm for a few months now, and we are absolutely loving it. We’ve quickly learned that when you’re out here, being prepared is key, especially since a quick trip back to the house isn’t always an option when you’re down by the barn or over in the orchard. We’ve started putting together a collection of essential items we keep on our side-by-side so we’re never caught off guard. Here are a few things that have quickly become non-negotiable for us.

A Comprehensive First Aid Kit
This is probably the most important thing we’ve added to our farm vehicle. When you’re using a machete to clear a hiking trail or cutting down a tree, the last thing you want is to be caught without a first aid kit. We got one from My Medic that has everything we would need for a basic emergency, from bandages to first aid cream. We also include a tourniquet, so we can be ready for anything and have the peace of mind that we’re prepared for a bigger issue if it ever arises.
Don’t forget that you can use your health savings account to purchase a first aid kit!

Rope You Can Actually Organize
We have rope in both of our vehicles and in the barns, but keeping it organized or compact is always a challenge. That’s why we were so excited when we found this safety rope that comes in a canister from rapidrope.com. It’s a game-changer! It’s perfect for pulling out the lawnmower if it gets stuck in the mud, or for moving stubborn limbs when we’re clearing out the back of the farm. Having it neatly contained in a bottle means we can just grab it and go without dealing with a tangled mess.

Extra Scissors and Snips
This might sound like a small thing, but it’s a huge time-saver. We keep a pair of scissors and pink marking tape right in the glove box. I love being able to snip a beautiful flower and take it up to the house if I find something special growing in the nursery. Or, if I’m out in the on the back side of the farm and find a unique flower or tree, I can mark them with the marking tape so I can find it later. It’s a simple thing that just makes life a little bit easier and more spontaneous.
Yes, I know snips would be much more useful than scissors, but I can’t find my garden snips yet after the move. Maybe they’ll show up when we finally organize the shed.

Cooler with a Tight Lid
We started with a regular cooler, but the lid kept popping off and spilling all our water. We quickly learned to get one with a tight-closing lid that fits perfectly in the back of the vehicle. We refill it every morning before we head out to the barn or over to where we’re planting some fruit trees. It’s so nice to have cold water on hand without having to run all the way back to the house.
Covered Five-Gallon Bucket
This one might surprise you, but it’s been a perfect addition to our utility vehicle. We keep a covered five-gallon bucket in the back so we can easily collect food scraps like vegetable peels and eggshells throughout the day. Our compost pile is down the hill, close to the barn, and I don’t want to run down there after every meal. By keeping this bucket handy but covered, we don’t have to deal with flies or rodents near the house, but we can still compost our scraps efficiently.
These few items have truly made a difference in how we navigate our new farm life. They’ve not only made us more efficient but have also given us a greater sense of security and preparedness. It’s amazing how a few simple things can make a big new place feel a little more like home.
What are the most important things you keep in a utility vehicle on the farm? Got any thing that I’m missing? I’d love to hear!
