Building model kits is a hobby that has been around for many years. This is a hobby that helps develop patience, encourages teamwork and attention to detail.
My son recently decided he wanted to try to do a model kit. Since he’s just turning 9, I figured it was a great time to see if this was a hobby for him. So I contacted Revell Models and talked to them about model kits. (If you are interested in starting a model, here is a great place to start. You can choose the age and skill level and it will give you the best choices for you.)
They sent me 2 kits -one Star Wars ship and one Blue Angels for him to try out.
Revell has a special kit series called the Snaptite models that are designed for beginning model builders. These kits are prepainted and do not even require glue. They come with stickers that you can use to decorate your finished product.
Connor tried out the Blue Angels kit first. Most of the parts snapped easily into place. However, there were a couple of the snap tips that he broke when he was trying to force the kit where it wasn’t supposed to fit. So, he decided that even though you weren’t supposed to use glue that he wanted to ‘make it more secure’.
He was able to do the entire Blue Angels kit with only one little bit of assistance. That gave him a sense of ownership and pride in his finished product.
He has now finished assembling the Star Wars ship and says he is ready to move to the next level kit where he will get to paint and decorate it himself.
