Last year my son wanted to be Captain Jack, from Pirates of the Caribbean. I don’t like buying a costume, so I did some research and realized we could create his own costume for almost no money. The biggest concern for my son as the hair. He didn’t realize I knew how to make a yarn wig! We had to make sure the hair turned out cool enough for the greatest pirate captain ever – Captain Jack! All three of my kids were quite impressed with how I was able to turn a skein of black yarn into an impressive pirates wig.
How to make a yarn wig
The most important thing to remember when making a yarn wig is to not wrap it too tight. You are going to need to wrap the yarn around 2 fixed objects – I used our treadmill. You can also use someone’s arms but they do tend to get a bit bored standing there.
Once you have the thickness you are wanting, you sew/tie/weave a seam down the middle. You can just make a single tie around the middle if you prefer. I chose to weave the black yarn through many times so I would have an actual hair line seam to put over his head.
Cut the loops on each end and remove it from the treadmill handles.
DIY No Seew Captain Jack Costume
For Captain Jack’s hair, we needed to add a few feathers and beads to the sides. If you needed a neater wig, you could trim all the edges.
Putting it all together:
- I added a bandana
- mascara mustache,
- white tattered shirt that I picked up at Goodwill (I cut it really raggedy and uneven)
- Pant were from an Indiana Jones costume several years back
- Black boots were from a Mulan soldier costume that I found at Goodwill years ago. I turned them wrong side out so they were just solid black.
We all agreed that this wig was quite convincing as Captain Jack’s hair! What do you think?
Have you ever made wigs out of yarn? Got any tips to add? Isn’t it fun when you can pull off an impressive costume with almost no money? My kids were super impressed and I was satisfied.
