If you know me well, you know that I am not a runner or real life athlete. But I do try to stay healthy. My favorite form of exercise is walking and hiking. Our family regularly takes off to go explore a new hiking trail through the woods, out to a waterfall or up a new mountain. But on the days when we can’t go hiking, I have to do something indoors to stay fit and get healthy. That’s when I turn on the treadmill and get started walking.
Getting Fit and Healthy in real life is not necessarily about going to the gym and training 5 times a week. It may not even be about training for a half marathon. I have no plan to run a full marathon or participate in intense, organized sports, but I do want to be fit and healthy for my real life adventures.
Getting Fit and Healthy in Real Life
I have been hearing the catchphrase ‘Functional Fitness’ on websites and on TV. But what does Functional Fitness in Real Life mean? How does it help me get healthy?
What is Functional Fitness?
Functional Fitness seems to be the term used to describe the ability to function in real world. Can you pick up your baby and carry them without hurting your back? Are you able to walk through the mall without getting winded? Can you play a pickup game of basketball without pulling a muscle? Are you able to function in real life? There are some very strong athletes who are able to do specific activities but then get hurt doing something very mundane.
Functional fitness and functional exercise are the latest gym buzzwords. They focus on building a body capable of doing real-life activities in real-life positions, not just lifting a certain amount of weight in an idealized posture created by a gym machine. read more from Wemd
I have to admit that I’ve never been to a gym to do my workouts. But I am committed to a healthy life. Here are some ideas of getting fit and healthy. Maybe you will find an idea that works for you!<
Treadmill: Walk and Work
Many people who own a treadmill use it for a clothes rack. But there are some who are dedicated to getting on and walking or running every day. I am one of those regular users. I purchased a treadmill desk back in December for $39.99 on Amazon and use it almost every day. I strap in my computer, set the treadmill for 3.0, incline varies between .5 and 2.0 and I start working. Some days I’ll end up walking for an hour before I realize the time has passed. I can easily get in 4-5 miles a day that I would typically have spent sitting at a desk.
Since I am on the computer many hours each day, this allows me to be moving while still getting my work done. This is my #1 way to get healthy in real life with my schedule.
Walk the Dog:
Dogs need exercise too! I regularly get an extra mile in when I take my dog for a walk. We move fast. I get bonus steps and he gets the exercise he needs as well. My friend Stacey shares some great tips for getting healthy with your dog!.
Use a Stability Ball:
Some people like to sit on a stability ball while they are working on the computer. I’ve never tried it, but sitting in a chair all day is definitely not the best way to get fit and healthy! I saw an episode of Pawn Stars where the owner decided to sit on a yoga ball instead of a traditional chair to help improve his back muscles. Have you tried this?
Use the Playground Equipment
If you have small children and spend time at the playground, then you have a perfect gym right there! Another friend, Jennifer uses the playground equipment to get in shape – Squats using the teeter-totter or Calf Exercises on the steps.
How do you get fit and healthy in real life? Got any tips for something that works for you? I’d love to hear!
