Easy Portable Family Fun

There are some definite requirements to meet the goal of ‘portable fun’.

  • Be compact
  • Affordable
  • No complicated rules
  • Allow for short bursts of time
  • Include different ages

Pepper Pong

Pepper Pong can be played on any flat surface, such as a dining table, picnic bench, floating dock, or even the hood of a car. Using a free-standing fence, players use specially designed rackets to hit a uniquely designed ball over the fence to score points. The learning curve is low enough that anyone at any skill level can play, yet can still be advanced enough that even pickleball pros can love it. Its pacing, rules, and scoring are similar to pickleball and the specially designed ball leads to long, competitive rallies.

Yahtzee and Cards

Since our family loves to play Rook, we keep a pack of Rook cards and travel Yahtzee in the car glove compartment so we will be ready for a fast game if we have extra time at a hotel or unexpected time waiting. A quick game of Yahtzee will even turn a full traffic jam into a memorable experience. Just roll the dice and have some family fun.

Frisbee or Football

Long road trips often involve stops at a rest area or local park. Turn these stretch breaks into more than just a restroom break by pulling out a frisbee or football. These things don’t take up much space in the vehicle but give everyone a chance to burn off some energy and stretch their legs.

What are your favorite go-to games or activities for portable family fun? I’d love to hear!
