Cumberland Falls, KY – Niagara of the South

Kentucky is not known for having an abundance of waterfalls, but we can boast having the largest waterfall south of the Niagara – the Cumberland Falls.

Known as the “Niagara of the South,” this 125 ft wide wall of water drops into a boulder-strewn gorge. With a full moon and clear night sky you can see the “moonbow,” a (lunar rainbow) that appears in the base of the waterfall. A phenomenon not found anywhere else in the Western Hemisphere!

This past weekend we took the family back to Cumberland Falls for a day of hiking and fun.

Not only are the Falls a beautiful sight and well worth the trip, but if you hike on down the main trail, you will see the huge rock boulders. They are an amazing sight.

Cumberland Falls State Park has picnic grounds, campgrounds, hiking trails, water sports opportunities, restaurant, lodging. I have been able to enjoy this State Park and waterfall several times in my 38 years of living in Kentucky.

Things to know

  • Cumberland Falls is located in Corbin, Ky at exit 25 on I75 (about halfway between Lexington and Knoxville).
  • The hiking trails are very clearly marked.  Most of the areas are wide enough for stroller access.
  • There are steps to get to some of the overlooks, but you can still enjoy the falls even if you don’t want to climb steps.
  • There is no fee to enter the park, hike/walk, or view the Falls.

Have you been to this state landmark recently? I’d love to see your pictures and hear your stories.
