Did you know that over 30 states and Canada place quilt blocks on barns?

A beautiful little cottage along the way….just one of those places where your eyes just automatically rested upon.

This is Patty Birkle’s barn, of Petersburg, KY.

Many of the barns had welcoming places to rest in the shade.

Virginia Adams beckoned us to get out of the car and “come on up”. There’s a kinship even with strangers when quilters start talking quilts. This block is located in Burlington, KY and is the property of Virginia and Harold Adams.

After seeing the barn block, of course it is important to not be in a hurry. We were invited to sit on the porch and talk about local folk lore, stories of quilts, and other such relaxin’ stories as come about when you’re sitting on a porch on a hot summer afternoon – listening to bees buzz, crickets chirp, and watching the grass grow.

Linda and Greg Salsbury own this quilt block, “Sugar Loaf”. They also have a large Alpaca Farm with intentions of having the biggest and best Alpaca Farm in Kentucky.

A Side Trip to Rabbit Hash, Kentucky

Our meanderings took us to the famous town of Rabbit Hash, KY. (If you’re looking for restrooms, or fast food…well you better take care of that before arriving here.)

The store certainly had about everything you might need, or want…but no prepared food. We were in luck the day we visited Rabbit Hash. There was smoke rising from the bar-b-que grill down the road, so we were able to purchase a pulled pork sandwich which was delicious. Sitting on an old picnic table beside the river made it taste even better.

And these fancy outhouses…well, they DID have electric lights.

In all, we only saw 31 quilt blocks on our adventure, but it took us all day, because it was about the adventure, not the destination.

There are barn quilt tours all over the United States. I did a quick internet search for barn quilt tours and got listings for tours all around the country! Just type in barn quilt tour and your state or area and I bet you’ll find something near you too!

When is the last time you took a day adventure with no agenda except making memories and enjoying time together? I’d love to hear!
