Visiting My Old Kentucky Home – Bardstown, Kentucky

|

Have you been to My Old Kentucky Home in Bardstown, KY? This is the home that inspired Stephen Foster to pen the words “the sun shines bright on my old Kentucky home…..” The kids and I often stop here when we take trips to Louisville because the restrooms in the Visitors Center are always spotless and it gives us all a place to stretch our legs and take a little walk. But last summer we finally took the time to tour the house and grounds.

My Old Kentucky Home

I can remember as a 4th grade student taking the trip to Bardstown to tour The Old Kentucky Home. When I was young, the house looked like the biggest house in the world. The reenactors were dressed in vintage clothes and we were impressed with the history of the house and grounds.

Going back as an adult and sharing this Kentucky historic landmark was a neat experience. You can’t live in the state of Kentucky and be a University of Kentucky fan without loving the sound of My Old Kentucky Home.

The Visitors Center serves as the main entry point to the popular tourism attraction, Federal Hill Mansion, “My Old Kentucky Home” of Stephen Foster’s ballad. Don’t miss your opportunity to tour Federal Hill, where the antebellum South comes to life in fascinating detail.

You can tour the grounds, view the flowers, see the carriage house, kitchen and smokehouse for free. If you decide you want to tour the Rowan house on the hill, you can pay the ticket price ($7.00 for adults, $3.50 for children).
