Do you know what PLARN is? If you say no, you are in good company. Up until 4 days ago, I had never heard the word plarn. But one night I was working late and got a little sidetracked looking for ideas on how to do a crocheted rag rug and discovered some crocheted plastic bags made out of Plarn. Well, if you have been around me long enough, you know that I can’t resist the challenge of learning something new. Here is my experiment with plarn crocheted plastic bags.
Plarn Crocheted Plastic Bags
Plarn is simply yarn made out of plastic. You lay the plastic grocery bags flat, fold them in half and then in half again. Then you cut them in 1″ strips. That gives you large loops of plastic. You simply knot them together by slipping the ends through each other which gives you long strands of plarn. I wound it up into a plarn ball and I was ready to start crochting.
I referred to this youtube video to help me make the knot.

What to make with Plarn
I did a little research online and found that these crocheted plastic bags made from plarn make great beach bags. You can rinse them off and lay them to dry and they’re ready to go again. I decided that I probably won’t become a plarn expert. I prefer the feel and bright colors of yarn. This is as far as I got.
There are craftors making some amazing creations out of plarn. I just did a quick pinterest search and found tons of crafts made out of plarn – Easter Baskets, beach bags, purses, snowmen, doormats – just about anything you can imagine.
Here’s a great step by step pattern of how to crochet a tote bag using plarn.
I’m going to start collecting my bright color plastic bags and try something fun. The gray is definitely a little on the boring side for me, but I’ve seen some really bright yellow and blue plastic bags.
Have you ever made anything out of plarn? I’d love to hear your stories!
