We love being outdoors in nature. There’s just nothing better than enjoying time with family while hiking on a gentle trail through the woods. We have lived in the Lexington area for many years and only discovered McConnell Springs about three years ago. This is a hidden treasure in the heart of downtown Lexington that we have now come to love. And the price is FREE!

McConnell Springs

If you don’t know better, you’ll miss the McConnell Springs Nature Center and hiking trail with beautiful pieces of stone walls and natural springs. It’s not hard to find, but it’s definitely hidden in between businesses and industrial work sites in downtown Lexington. But there are lots of signs directing you the Center.

There is a Nature Education Center with books, puppets, turtles, posters and chairs where you can view the local birds and wildlife.

A visit to McConnell Springs today exposes the visitor to a seemingly natural landscape, with springs bubbling to the surface and the dense tree canopy; a closer look reveals remnants of stone fence and foundations that hint at the cultural past of the place. Come travel through time and learn what McConnell Springs has been and how it came to be what it is today.

A very easy paved walkway takes you through the woods past the Blue Hole and Boils Springs. Along the path are some beautiful stone fences and picturesque photo ops!

McConnell Springs

We have been many times in the last few years and always make sure we have our camera. You just never know what you’re going to see.

My husband and I each have our own camera. It is an ongoing contest to see who can capture the best image for the trip. On one of our hikes, I caught this picture of a dragonfly in the wildflowers. Not to be outdone, he saw the reflection in the water. I think we both are winners!

This looks like a fun place. We have talked about camping in the area and this would be a neat place to check out.
