Central KY Wildlife Refuge

When the leaves start to change colors and the weather hits the low 60’s, it’s time to grab the tennis shoes, some bottles of water and find the closest hiking trails. Last week our family drove over to the Central KY Wildlife Refuge area located less than 20 minutes from Danville, KY. We hiked for several hours, enjoyed the sounds, sights and smells of Fall and took some great photos.

I loved the fact that you could be walking on a wide leaf-covered path around the meadow or pond, then the next few minutes you are climbing up the side of a mountain range or hiking a path under pine trees on beds of needles and pinecones. There is so much to see and experience.

The trails were well marked with signs at each trail option. When we arrived, we picked up a trail map that gives a description of each trail (difficulty level and length of hike).

The Central Kentucky Wildlife Refuge is a 500-acre preserve, located 13 miles from Danville in the Parksville knob land and bordering a stretch of the beautiful North Rolling Fork. The refuge is open to all as a protected area for the enjoyment and study of nature in its many fascinating forms — a large, typical area of Boyle County set aside as a permanent sanctuary for plant and animal forms native to Central Kentucky, to be enjoyed by future generations. It is open year-round from dawn to dusk.

You can hike for 30 minutes or spend hours roaming the trails. This is definitely a great place to spend the day!

Have you been there? What’s your favorite trail? I’d love to hear!

Too bad we don’t live closer. Your family is a lot like mine. This weekend we have been hiking O’bannon Woods in the Harrison Crawford State Forest in Indiana.

I agree!!! I’ve never heard of Obannon Woods! I’m thinking you need to post some pictures and tell me about it so I can add it to my ‘want to go visit’ list!!! :-)
